Link Found Between Diabetes & MS

Jun 22, 2009

Several studies have showed a link between Type 1 diabetes (was formally juvenile diabetes or insulin dependent diabetes) and MS. They have shown that people with Type 1 diabetes or having a family history of Type 1 diabetes are much more prone to have MS. Both are autoimmune diseases where the body builds up an immune response against its own tissue. Although, both are clinically different, researchers have found that in a test tube you can barely tell the two diseases apart. There is also a diabetic drug (Actos) that is currently being studied for use in MS patients.

One of the most important ways to manage your diabetes and MS is by eating the right foods in the right amounts.

Some basic guidelines to follow are:

  • Do not skip meals.
  • Eat when you are hungry and stop when you are full.
  • Eat meals and snacks at regular times every day.
  • Eat three balanced meals a day, plus snacks
  • Spread your meals out over the day. For example: Breakfast at 6 am, Snack at 10 am, Lunch at 12:30 pm, Snack at 4:00 pm and Dinner at 6:30 pm.
  • Eat a variety of foods.
  • Make sure there are a variety of colors in your diet with fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Eat plenty of whole grains.
  • Make sure you get enough fiber every day.
  • 20-35 grams of fiber is recommended every day.
  • Watch your portion sizes.
  • Restaurants give you 2-4 times more than you should eat at a meal.
  • Slow down and enjoy your food.
  • You will feel full faster if you take your time with your meal.
  • Plan out your meals everyday so you do not overeat or eat the wrong kind of foods.
