Amid family, friends, colleagues and supporters, multi-platinum recording artist Clay Walker was honored by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Mid South Chapter last night during their 20th Annual Dinner of MS Champions held at Loews Vanderbilt Hotel. Walker received the Hope Award, the Mid South Chapter’s highest honor for outstanding civic and community service. You can view the footage on ClayWalker.com – click on Clay TV!
Walker, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 1996, founded Band Against MS (BAMS) in 2003 to create awareness, provide educational information, and fund important research programs for those living with the disease. To date, BAMS has raised over two million dollars for research to find the cause of and a cure for MS. MS affects the central nervous system and plagues 2.5 million people worldwide. It is the leading cause of non-traumatic disability in young people throughout the world.
“It is an honor to receive the Hope Award,” said Walker. “It means even more coming from an organization that I have such a close relationship with through my foundation, BAMS. Every day, millions of people suffer from this illness, and I hope that I can stand as proof that you can live a healthy and satisfying life with MS.”
During the evening’s ceremony, Dr. Larry Dillaha and country music recording artist Heidi Newfield paid touching tribute to Walker. Dillaha is the executive vice president and chief medical officer of Sciele Pharma, a pharmaceutical company based in Atlanta, Ga. Newfield, singer of the chart-topping single “Johnny & June,” has a personal connection with Walker and MS. Newfield’s mother passed away from MS in 2004.
Clay Walker made his country music debut in 1993 with his smash hit “What’s It To You,” which quickly climbed to #1 on the Billboard charts. Since then, he has sold over eleven million albums, had eleven #1 hit singles, and each year his concert tour continues to excite crowds all across the U.S. For more information about Clay Walker, visit http://www.claywalker.com.
