Bike Team Rides To Raise Money For Multiple Sclerosis

Aug 18, 2009

(BAMS) is proud to announce the expansion of their bike team, just in time for three upcoming rides in September and October of this year to raise money in the fight against multiple sclerosis. BAMS, founded by multi-platinum recording artist Clay Walker, created the bike team as an extension of the artist’s charity to participate in rides across the country and to raise awareness of the disease.

The BAMS bike team will start their fall tour by participating in the Bike MS Ride 2009 presented by Point B in Mount Vernon, Wash., on September 12–13, which regularly attracts more than 2,000 riders. Fifteen riders will participate and raise money in the annual ride on behalf of BAMS that benefits the National MS Society’s Greater Washington Chapter.

“Bike rides are a big part of the MS community,” said BAMS bike team captain Curt Walsh. “It’s one of the main ways our group helps raise money for MS research, and we are excited at the chance to have teams representing BAMS in the 2009 Bike MS Ride, the Valero 2009 Alamo Ride to the River and the Bike to Jack and Back ride.”

A team representing BAMS will ride alongside 3,500 other cyclists on October 3 and 4 at the Valero 2009 Alamo Ride to the River. Previously known as the Bike MS South Texas ride, this long-standing bike ride is celebrating its 20th anniversary, and was recently revamped with a new course never-before seen by riders. The family-friendly ride offers a round-trip route staring and ending in San Antonio, along with multiple mileage options for riders.

The Jack Daniel’s Bike to Jack and Back is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year with profits benefiting the National MS Society’s Mid South Chapter. Starting in historic Franklin, Tenn., on October 3, this two-day, 150-mile ride will lead the BAMS bike team through the back roads of Tennessee to the site of the Jack Daniel’s distillery in Lynchburg and back to Franklin on October 4.

In addition to the three rides in 2009, the BAMS bike team plans on participating in four rides in 2010. With each of these rides comes the unique challenge of fundraising. “The main goal of each ride is to raise money to help find a cure for MS, but without the support of donations, our riders cannot participate,” commented Walsh. “For example, for riders to participate in the Bike to Jack and Back, they must raise a minimum of $300. It’s hard for riders to continually find new supporters for each ride, but we’re always on the lookout for an opportunity to share with others our mission and our cause: MS.”

Band Against MS, Inc., (BAMS) is a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit public charity committed to providing educational information for those living with multiple sclerosis, funding programs researching a cure for multiple sclerosis, and funding programs helping those living with the disease. Nationally acclaimed recording artist Clay Walker established BAMS in February 2003 because he wanted to help others living with the same disease he has battled since 1996.
